Project Description:
The Challenge:
How can we design for coastal environments that face climatic disasters like rapid sea-level rise and an increase in the frequency of devastating storms?
The Proposal:
The E.CO-EXIST floatation island is composed of a lightweight bamboo frame that houses 55-gallon plastic air drums enclosed in a water-proof bald cypress shell. Together, these materials provide a buoyant force capable of displacing enough water to safely float the island safely above incoming floodwaters.
The Effect:
By redesigning how we design for climatic disasters, the result alters the relationship between cities and their surrounding bodies of water. Through embracing inevitable flooding, land-scaping and water-scaping developments for a unique urban fabric that enables us to coexist in an environment that would otherwise be lost to sea-level rise.
